The Preparatory Academy at Southeastern: PASE

What is PASE?

PASE gives highly motivated students a flexible work environment to ensure the optimal conditions for Student Centered Learning. Operating as a school-within-a-school model, PASE is currently composed of all of Southeastern's juniors and seniors. There is one teacher from each of the four core content classes who provides and monitors instruction for the two levels of classes concurrently.

PASE students have approximately 5 hours of flexible work time where they choose how to spend their time completing their five PASE classes (English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and an online elective). For example, students who need additional math help can spend more than an hour per day on math work but less time on English. Some students are also more productive when they can focus on one subject at a time instead of jumping from class to class throughout the day, so they may choose to dedicate extended amounts of time on subjects to increase productivity. During the five PASE hours, teachers offer a variety of Scheduled Learning Opportunities (SLOs) to enhance student learning. SLOs include a variety of options, including but not limited to lectures, small group workshops, tutoring, labs, etc. On Monday mornings, students receive a calendar of the SLOs being offered each week and students budget their time accordingly. Teachers regularly conference with students to provide scheduling assistance and to help students make smart goals and decisions for each week’s opportunities.

PASE operates in a separate area of the general school building. Within PASE, there are many different types of environments that allow students to access and utilize their different modalities. There is a large library with open seating in both smaller and larger group settings. In addition, the library features a small café that is run by students and a café lounge for students to eat in. This lounge has both tables and chairs and couches for seating. Attached to the main library are a computer lab, a classroom, and various small study rooms for students to access.

Hear From Students in PASE

To apply to PASE, please submit an online application. Students will answer questions regarding work ethic, motivation, and success with Student Centered Learning. Additionally, students are asked to request two teacher recommendations. Recommenders will assess students on five skills: intrinsic motivation, ability to work in groups, attendance, ability to adapt to change, and ability to work in a student-centered classroom.
