Energy Assistance Available for Low-Income Utility Customers at 14 Michigan Organizations

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) said that the 14 organizations that received $89,615,000 in grants are now assisting eligible low-income customers.

"The severe cold temperature Michigan is experiencing has put a strain on many low-income customers' utility budgets," said MPSC Chairman John D. Quackenbush. "All 14 organizations that were awarded $89 million in grants are now assisting eligible utility customers. I encourage customers to call 2-1-1 or their utility to inquire about assistance that may be available to them."

The 14 organizations that received grants and the counties they serve are listed here http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid= http://www.michigan.gov/mpsc/0,4639,7-159-52493_52588-317123--,00.html>.

A majority of the grant funds will be expended by the organizations during the "crisis season" that begins November 1 and ends May 31. Low-income households are encouraged to seek assistance during that time.

The $89 million in grants is funded through $50 million collected through a low-income energy assistance funding factor approved by the MPSC; and $40 million in Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds provided by DHS.

More information is available on the MPSC's Be WinterWise http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid= http://michigan.gov/bewinterwise> website, which features important information on how to reduce energy usage during the heating months, how to avoid shut-offs, and ways to get assistance with bills.

CLEARCorps/Detroit can replace your old, inefficient refrigerator with a brand new Whirlpool Energy Star-rated refrigerator from Lowe’s.  Your fridge must be built before December 2000, you cannot be in Shutoff, and you must meet a maximum income requirement. Info labels on your fridge will not say how old it is.  This program is only for DTE electrical customers.

Download and Print the application HERE.http://clearcorpsdetroit.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Refrigerator-Sign-Up-form-Jan-2014-New-Income-guidelines.pdf>

Please note: CLEARCorps/Detroit will process 80 complete and qualified applications a month in the order in which they were received. This may result in a waiting period depending on when clients submit their applications. This program is subject to close at any time.

If you are unable to print, please contact a family member with a printer, or visit your local library.  If neither of these options are available, we can then mail you an application.

You will need to provide us with the model number, serial number, and brand of your fridge, proof of income for all adults living in the home, and a copy of your current DTE bill. If an adult does not receive or earn any income, please fill out this letter of no income (PDF)http://clearcorpsdetroit.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Letter-of-No-Income.pdf>.

If you do not include your model number and serial number, we will place your application on hold.

You must own the fridge to be replaced, and Lowe’s must be able to recycle your current fridge. The DTE account holder should be the primary applicant.

We hope this opportunity will lead you to a new and efficient refrigerator!

How old is my fridge?
